The Alaska Psychiatric Association is a district branch of the American Psychiatric Association, the largest psychiatric organization in the world. We represent psychiatric physicians across the state of Alaska, and work collectively on their behalf and on behalf of the patients they serve.

The Alaska Psychiatric Association is a district branch of the American Psychiatric Association, a medical specialty society representing more than 38,000 physician leaders in mental health.

The objectives of the Alaska Psychiatric Association are to continuously improve the ability of its members to provide quality psychiatric services to individuals and families in need. The Association also strives to promote the welfare of all those with mental illness and to foster the medically-based principles of psychiatry.

Disaster Resources Available in the Wake of Typhoon Halong

Typhoon Halong struck western Alaska in early October 2025, bringing hurricane-force winds, record storm surges, and severe flooding that devastated numerous remote Alaska Native communities and displaced more than 1,500 people. This devastation has had—and will continue to have--a substantial psychological impact on affected populations. We've developed a list of disaster resources related to coping after a disaster. Americans are More Anxious than Last Year About the Upcoming Holidays; Health Care and the Economy Also Major Concerns for Many

As we head toward the year’s end, Americans are more anxious about the holidays than last year, according to the latest APA Healthy Minds Poll. Among U.S. adults, 41% say they anticipate more stress related to the holidays this year than last year, a notable increase over 2024 (28%) and 2023 (29%). Younger adults are more likely than older adults to anticipate more stress this year (49% of 18 to 34-year-olds, versus 27% of those 65+). Read more Here.

A Small Area of the Brain May Be Associated with Schizophrenia Risk, New Research Finds

New research published online in the American Journal of Psychiatry provides new molecular insights into the role of the habenula, a pea-sized brain region that helps regulate motivation and mood, in contributing to the risk of schizophrenia. A team of researchers at Lieber Institute for Brain Development and Johns Hopkins found that many schizophrenia-related molecular changes appear to be specific to this region, suggesting the habenula could be a potential target for future treatments.Read More.
